about

Seeing a photograph of a base-jumper take that first step off the cliff edge, that ultimately defining moment of departure, I thought about how we dive into the fresh unknown as improvisors, leaving the solid ground of what has been composed, the familiar.

For me, it is an intoxicating, vital feeling, demanding a quick-fire aliveness. It is at once the most free and also the most disciplined I can be.

The music in this collection is a free-dive into the music-making I find my heart most drawn to, along with fellow travellers on this path, Asaf and Gwilym.

I have found the artwork of Esra Kizir Gokcen particularly inspiring, due to the bold use of improvised beginnings and free-flowing forms, underpinned by a rigorous technique.

The first half of this recording was inspired by her “Art From Within” book of daily drawings and the “Sail To Hope” collection. Here, she addresses her own migrant story and illuminates the second meaning of “Moment Of Departure” in these detailed, soulfully eclectic paintings.

In my music, I prize rapport with those around me a great deal, for it buoys us up on our musical journey of trust and risk, putting wind in our sails.

For me, composition is far from just a platform from which to jump into improvisation and the classical music of my upbringing, especially that of the string orchestra, feels like home to me.

"And summer, that keeps returning like a ghost
Of something death has merely made beautiful."
From Autumn, by Philip Larkin

Whereas the great Vivaldi approached his Seasons as moments caught in time like postcards, my Forever Seed traces those pivotal changes of season which can be such emotional “transitions” for us.

“Fruit” references Spring into Summer
“Made Beautiful” - Summer to Autumn
“Harbinger” - Autumn to Winter
“Nascency” - Winter to Spring

The finale “Praise” is a humble acknowledgement of our human place in all this, as well as a tribute to the pastoral music I heard from my father's record player all those years ago.

Each of these concerto-like movements are tagged with a corresponding, largely improvising trio where Thomas Gould departs beautifully from his written soloist part to join Gwilym and cimbalom player Rob Millett, forming interludes that balance out the weightiness of the notated orchestra.

I’d like to thank the two members of The Lighthouse Trio who have inspired me for 20 years, Gwilym Simcock and Asaf Sirkis, who literally co-created the title track “Moment Of Departure” with their beautiful spontaneous playing. Working with Thom Gould has been a delight, as he shows once again that brilliant and potent marriage of amazing technique and an openness to the moment.

Thanks go to Yazz and to Rob for their mesmerising sound and approach and to the brilliant Britten Sinfonia and London Session String Orchestras. Thank you to Martin Hummel of Ubuntu whose positive energy is appreciated by so many on today’s jazz scene. Continued thanks are offered to those teachers of Spirit that guide us toward a larger unity.

The commissioned paintings on the themes of The Forever Seed by Esra Kizir Gokcen portray musical seeds that seem to float amidst horizon-less environments where all is entwined in an incomprehensibly bigger whole.
